The Sigil of Ameth was created in the 16th century for Queen Elizabeth I by Dr. John Dee, an advisor and astrologer. A regular heptagon, or a seven-sided polygon lies directly inside the outer circle.
Schwartz Projects is a new initiative created by Patrick Michalopoulos, the director of Schwartz Gallery, to investigate and seek out dynamic and more flexible models of exhibition-making. Schwartz Projects introduces IMPROMPTU, its first such investigation, a summary of which will appear on this blog over the next month until the exhibition opening on March 5th 2009.

ReplyDeleteThankyou Luke...This is particularly interesting, certainly with regards our apparent obsession with everything 7. I enjoy this reference to ' Dee's 'The Sigil of Ameth', (???) fascinated to discover it contains the various names of Gods and angels (???)
ReplyDeletefuther on that route....
....Seven of the letters are capitalized, indicating the first letters of certain concealed angelic names. To find the names of these angels, Dee was instructed to use the numbers connected with each letter. Where the number was above the letter, he was to count that many letters clockwise to find the next letter of the name; where the number was below the letter, he was to count counterclockwise. Each name ended when he reached one of the six letters without a number.
Thus, seven names were produced:
Thaaoth
Galaas
Gethog
Horlon
Innon
Aaoth
Galethog
With note to Sigil :
ReplyDeleteA sigil (pronounced /ˈsɪdʒəl/ or /ˈsɪgəl/; pl. sigilia or sigils) is a symbol created for a specific magical purpose. A sigil is usually made up of a complex combination of several specific symbols or geometric figures each with a specific meaning or intent.
The term sigil derives from the Latin sigillum meaning "seal," though it may also be related to the Hebrew סגולה (segulah meaning "word, action or item of spiritual effect"). A sigil may have an abstract, pictorial or semi-abstract form.
In medieval ceremonial magic, the term sigil was commonly used to refer to occult signs which represented various angels and demons which the magician might summon. The magical training books called the Grimoires often listed pages of such sigils. A particularly well-known list is in the Lesser Key of Solomon, in which the sigils of the 72 princes of the hierarchy of hell are given for the magician's use. Such sigils were considered to be the equivalent of the true name of the spirit, and thus granted the magician a measure of control over the beings.
Sigils are commonly found in Jewish mysticism and Kabbalistic magic (being an especial focus of Sefer Raziel HaMalakh and other medieval Jewish mystical sources) upon which much of Western magic is based.
